Staff Recruitment and Development

KWETB recognises the importance of recruiting staff through a transparent and accountable process. In relation to FET, there are staff members who are directly employed by KWETB and staff who are employed by second providers.

The Human Resources section manages recruitment and policies and procedures are clearly set out. FET posts are publicly advertised in newspapers and through the etbvacancies.ie site. Applications are shortlisted by a panel set up by Human Resources. Following shortlisting, an interview panel is set up and is usually chaired by a member of the ETB Board and includes a personnel expert and a FET expert. At the end of the interviews, candidates are marked and a recommendation is made to the Chief Executive. References are checked and an offer of employment is made. All employees are required to complete Garda Vetting.

KWETB teaching staff are required to hold a suitable subject matter qualification in addition to a pedagogical qualification. Many KWETB teaching staff are recognised by the Teaching Council and adhere to the professional standards of that organisation.

All employees are required to complete Garda Vetting in line with KWETB’s Child Safeguarding Policy.

Newly appointed staff are inducted both at school, centre and service level and at organisational level. Line managers manage and review the performance of their staff on an on-going basis.

Staff development is important and staff members are supported to access on-going professional development including:

  • Staff induction;
  • Statutorily-required training in Health and Safety, Child Safeguarding, Occupational First Aid, Fire Safety and Manual Handling;
  • Quality-specific training including cluster groups, communities of practice and seminars;
  • Access to FESS training opportunities and seminars;
  • Erasmus+ Projects;
  • Programme-specific training;
  • Tailored training responding to identified need;
  • Systems training;
  • ICT training including TEL; and
  • Individual Continuous Professional Development.

KWETB was a member of the steering group for the SOLAS FET Professional Development Strategy and had one of the highest response levels to the survey of staff. KWETB will in the pilot CPD provision developed by SOLAS as a response to this survey.
